HMS Fly was the fifth of twenty-five Swan Class Sloop rigged ships built between 1766 and 1780. These Swan class sloops were designed by Williams and constructed by order of the Admiralty. They were built at Sheerness Dockyard. The Fly’s keel was laid in January 1776 and launched on the 14th of September, 1776. HMS Fly was commissioned mainly for convoy escort and dispatch duty. She did capture a French privateer, Le Gleneur, off Portland after a long chase. In 1800 she captured another French privateer, the Cutter Trompeur off La Hague. The Swan class ships were unusually attractive vessels. They had very sleek hull lines and and unusual amount of decorations for the size of vessel. The Class measured 97’7 on the gun deck and displaced 300 tons. They carried 125 officers and men and initially were equiped the 14 carriage guns – later 16 guns- and 16 swivel guns. The original plans for the Fly still exist. This kit is drawn from those plans.
