Nice colorful original box. Looks complete with paperwork. Condition: (Very Good – Excellent) Item Dimensions: Box: 15″ x 2″ x 7 – 1/4. The Revell XSL-01 kit has thus become a “Holy Grail” collector’s items that command top dollar. Revell’s conceptual XSL-01. (Experimental Space Laboratory) represented a transitional stage between the romantic “cigar with wings” post-War aesthetic still visible in Hawk’s “Atlas ICBM” and the more utilitarian form that actual launch vehicles had, by this date, already assumed. FINDING A 1957 ORIGINAL LIKE THIS AT A GOOD PRICE IS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE.

Very Rare Revell Xsl-01 Manned Space Ship (1957) S Kit Missing One Part

This kit was issued in 1957 as a Revell S kit and is the only issue of this model. Angle at Systems Laboratories (California) as a moon rocket. Parts are molded in metallic blue, silver, orange and clear plastic. Most parts are still attached to the sprues. This kit is missing ONE part, the Movable Canopy (clear part #16, see photo). Otherwise the kit is complete with all other parts, decals, instructions, XSL-01 Operation Manual booklet (has clipped edge) and boxtray dividers. The model has not been assembled or painted. The box is in good condition with no rips, tears or split corners but does have some edgewear. There is a price tag on the boxtop cover (lower left) and on one end panel (see photos). Great high energy boxart of rocket launch by Jack Leynnwood. Boxart with bright colors. Revell H-1800198 Xsl-01 Manned Space Ship (xsl Experimental Space Laboratory)

Often referred to as one of the two “Holy Grail” space kits, the XSL-01 was produced in 1957, never to be released again. There’s the common “damaged mold” theory circulating out there but I tend to believe the kit was likely too cost prohibitive to reissue. The XSL-01 and the Revell Space Station were both designed by space scientist/engineer Ellwyn E. Angle of Systems Laboratories, Inc. The kit features a detailed, manned top stage w/full interior, removable top, opening hatch, crew members and ground crew with a detailed launch pad. All stages come apart to show all flight phases. The XSL-01 Operations Manual details its journey to the moon. This was my keeper/builder that I’m letting go to someone who will do the model justice with a good build. Kit is guaranteed complete as described here: the box, instructions, and decal sheet lack much to be desired. Again, this was my builder so I kept the lowest grade of all three. The box bottom is taped together because it was very brittle. The instruction sheet was so brittle it separated at the folds; not pretty but serves the purpose. We all know aftermarket decals are available. The only piece missing is one of the small, round windows; however, note the remaining 5 windows have old 60’s modeling glue on them. This old 60’s glue shows up a couple of other places but is minor, easy to clean and not damaging. I would use clear sheet here anyway. The photos describe the kit condition well and support the narrative here. I’m including the July 2006 FSM issue with the article on Mat Irvine’s build.
