Often referred to as one of the two “Holy Grail” space kits, the XSL-01 was produced in 1957, never to be released again. There’s the common “damaged mold” theory circulating out there but I tend to believe the kit was likely too cost prohibitive to reissue. The XSL-01 and the Revell Space Station were both designed by space scientist/engineer Ellwyn E. Angle of Systems Laboratories, Inc. The kit features a detailed, manned top stage w/full interior, removable top, opening hatch, crew members and ground crew with a detailed launch pad. All stages come apart to show all flight phases. The XSL-01 Operations Manual details its journey to the moon. This was my keeper/builder that I’m letting go to someone who will do the model justice with a good build. Kit is guaranteed complete as described here: the box, instructions, and decal sheet lack much to be desired. Again, this was my builder so I kept the lowest grade of all three. The box bottom is taped together because it was very brittle. The instruction sheet was so brittle it separated at the folds; not pretty but serves the purpose. We all know aftermarket decals are available. The only piece missing is one of the small, round windows; however, note the remaining 5 windows have old 60’s modeling glue on them. This old 60’s glue shows up a couple of other places but is minor, easy to clean and not damaging. I would use clear sheet here anyway. The photos describe the kit condition well and support the narrative here. I’m including the July 2006 FSM issue with the article on Mat Irvine’s build. “Snaps together comes apart demonstrates principles of space flight”. It appears to be complete but not 100% positive includes 105 plastic parts, instruction booklet operation manual and lithos. All parts are clean and in great condition none are cracked or split. Instruction booklet and operation manual have turned slightly darker from age still easy to read. Lithos/ decals may need help even when first produced they did not work well. Box is in good condition for age all corners are solid no splits. There are cosmetic imperfections that include discoloration (turned a little darker) scratches, scuffs, old tape marks on two sides and bottom, remains of an old sticker on front upper corner, light rubbing bald spots along edges and corners. Paint and “S” cement are not included. Even though box has some shelf storage wear kit is new and appears to be complete (not positive) it appears to be slightly hard to find and would make an excellent addition to any collection. The kits detail is amazing considering its vintage. This kit was issued in 1958 and is valued in John W. Includes INSTRUCTIONS and XSL-01 OPERATION MANUAL booklet, both in good condition please see PICTURES #2 & 3. KIT PARTS have been inventoried and are 100% complete. DECAL SHEET is original but is not complete one of the instrument panel decals (#14) has been applied to the kit, and one of two small XSL-01 decals (#20; identical to #19) are missing. BOX TOP is only in fairly good condition – there are a couple of tape tears on the box top, one is 2 x ½ in size, the other is 1/8 x ½.
