The HMS Bounty was commissioned for a special mission of acquiring breadfruit plants for Royal Navy from Tahiti. The HMS Bounty was small in size, but big on impact. On May 7, 1765 the world’s oldest commissioned warship, the famous HMS Victory, was first launched from the Chatham Dockyard. This was the beginning of 200 years of almost continuous and dedicated service from this loyal and committed warship. In March 1778 John Lindsay was appointed her very first captain, but he was transferred to captain HMS Prince George in May 1778 when Admiral the Honorable Augustus Keppel decided to raise his flag in Victory. She was commissioned in May 1778 under the command of Rear Admiral John Campbell (1st Captain) and Captain Jonathan Faulknor (2nd Captain), with the flag of Admiral Keppel. Although already a veteran of many hard fought navy battles, on October 21, 1805 the HMS Victory fought the very battle for which she would become famous. Under the British flagship, she heroically defeated the Franco-Spanish fleet in the tragic Trafalgar, Spain battle. In 1812 HMS Victory was retired and brought to rest peacefully in Portsmouth, England on the south coast of England. The Sirius was the Royal Navy flagship of The First Fleet. She led the First Fleet on their historic journey to establish the first European colony in New South Wales, Australia. She left England on May 13, 1787, and sailed to Australia with stops at Santa Cruz, Rio de Janeiro and Cape Town. She reached Port Jackson eight month and a week later, on January 26. Overall dimensions of the model are 45L x 14W x 48H cm 1:74 Scale. This model is fully assembled and ready to display (NOT a kit). Entirely hand built by using individual wooden planks in hull construction. Cannons, musket, anchors, decorative fixtures and intricate details are sculpted metal. Sirius sailed under the command of Captain John Hunter and carried Captain Arthur Phillip, who would be the first governor of the new colony. According to Sirius midshipman Daniel Southwell, she also carried the K1 marine chronometer used by Captain James Cook on his second and third voyages around the world. Sirius, with the other ten vessels of the First Fleet, left Portsmouth on 13 May 1787 and arrived at Botany Bay on 21 January 1788. The 252-day voyage, which had gone via Rio de Janeiro and the Cape of Good Hope, had covered more than 15,000 miles (24,000 km). It soon became clear that Botany Bay was unsuitable for a penal settlement so Siriushelped move the colony farther north to Sydney Cove, Port Jackson on 26 January. While waiting to move, a large gale arose preventing any sailing, during this period the French expeditionary fleet of Jean-Francois de Galaup, comte de Laperouse arrived. Under the command of John Hunter, the Sirius survived a treacherous nine month round trip to bring much needed supplies to the colony. During this time the situation for the colony became critical as the settlement failed in its early attempts at self-sufficiency. The HMS Guardian was dispatched from England in September in 1789 to re-supply the colony but it failed to reach Australia. On 19 March 1790, Sirius was wrecked on a reef at Norfolk Island while landing stores. Jamison would eventually become Surgeon-General of New South Wales. Sirius’s crew was stranded on Norfolk Island until 21 February 1791, when they were rescued and eventually taken back to England. During the four months voyage along the coast Cook charted the coastline from Victoria to Queensland and proclaimed the eastern part of the continent for Great Britain. Cook was the first person to accurately chart a substantial part of the coastline of Australia and to fix the continent in relation to known waters. His explorations of Australia were followed up within a few years by a British expedition to settle the “new” continent. Accordingly, Cook is considered a major figure in Australia’s modern history. Numerous places in Australia, particularly on the east Australian coast and New Zealand, have been named after him or his vessel, and many of the names he gave to parts of the Australian east coast in 1770 are still used e.
